With Alex having zero interest in anything other than football at a young age, it seemed unlikely that she would form any creative interest, let alone dance. However, her love for Northern Soul and Stax music meant that dance was definitely on the horizon for her at some point – having begun her dance career at 13 through competitive hip hop and breakdance, she grew curious of other styles and enrolled in contemporary, ballet and jazz classes in preparation for starting full time college training.
Alex studied her first two years in Professional Dance Performance in Glasgow and progressed onto complete her BA Honours in Dance through Northumbria University in 2016. She is also a member of the teachers institution of “Progressing Ballet Technique”.
Since graduating, Alex has worked in several different sectors of the dance industry – she has choreographed with Tim Noble, performed and worked with students of Singapore’s School of the Arts and was a member of the dance lecturer faculty of Glasgow Kelvin College’s HND and NQ dance courses since the age of 20.
Alex joined Shaper/Caper in 2018 thanks to funding support from Creative Scotland's Year of Young People Creative Traineeship Fund. The traineeship was such as success that Alex joined the company full time as Dance Artist in March 2019!
Who would Alex like to dance with?
The two and only original Blues Brothers - Sam and Dave, on stage during the 1966 Stax tour – talk about cutting shapes and breaking sweats!
